The Art of Data

My daughter (Rachel Longstreet) and I submitted a piece for the Art of Data sponsored by the city of Kansas City. We were one of the commission pieces chosen for the show. Rachel earned her Masters in Fine Arts from the University of Minnesota and she has been in many art shows.. This was my first art show. Our piece was called "Machine." It was a spoof on machine learning because much of machine learning is perceived as magical or mystical. Machine was complete with flashing lights and sound effects.
Collaboration with an Artist
It is challenging collaborating with an artist because an artist thinks fundamentally differently than a data scientist. We approach problems and potential solutions from completely different perspectives. A data scientist takes opaque ideas and tries to make them concrete. An artist takes what we believe we know, challenges us and often makes them opaque. She often takes the known and makes it unknown.
