Learning Piano

David LongstreetDavid Longstreet
Learning to play the piano was an opportunity to become a novice again. After my first piano lesson, I was overwhelmed with a new vocabulary,  acronyms, jargon and symbols.  I was so turned around, I was having trouble determining my left hand from my right hand.  Being a novice is a struggle.

Experts forget what it is like to be a novice . They use lots of acronyms and jargon which only confuses a novice.   Jargon is defined as "special words or expressions that are used by a particular profession or group and are difficult for others to understand."  What exacerbates the problem is most adults do not admit ignorance and ask for clarification they let the "expert" ramble along.

Data Scientist's  use a lot of jargon!  They speak in code and often confuse the audience. They use unfamiliar terms such as machine learning, deep learning, and neural networks,   They even create acronyms  from unfamiliar terms and use S.D. instead of the saying standard deviation.  They do this in hopes the audience (often management) will confuse jargon with knowledge.

Level 4

Recently, I reached level 4 on the piano and competed in a piano competition.  Piano is a lot like mathematics it never really gets easy.  As you progress along the knowledge of mathematics (or data science) the equations become more complex.  The same is true with the piano.

Btw, I received a superior rating at the piano competition.  Playing in front of a piano judge and an audience was a new experience for me as well.  It was a bit unnerving. Like many things, my piano skills are directly proportional the amount of time and effort that I put into it. In the end,
